Mercedes-Benz Vans USA has begun construction of their brand new sprinter van plant in North Charleston, S.C. which begins the company’s efforts to build the popular van model in the United States. Mercedes are adding to their existing facility and hope to have their first sprinter vans come from the plant within the next few years as opposed to currently being manufactured in Germany.

Michael Balke, incoming CEO/director of production for Mercedes-Benz Vans USA said;

“Today we are here to break the ground for a new plant so that we finally have the opportunity to build the sprinter from scratch here in the US in this new production facility,”

Some 1,300 local jobs are expected to be added at the location when fully operational. The new plant in Charleston allows Mercedes to efficiently and economically meet the growing demand for its sprinter van and improve construction and delivery times. Last year Mercedes-Benz sold in excess of 320,000 Sprinters worldwide.
