BOX TRUCK COMPANIES

Box Trucks for Loads Between a Van and a Semi

Plenty of freight is too big for a cargo van and too small to fill a 53 ft trailer. Paying for the trailer wastes money, and squeezing into the van rarely works.

HotShotTrucking.com books a dedicated box truck or straight truck for that freight, so your load rides alone. One dispatcher stays on the shipment from quote to signed delivery.

Most box truck loads are pallets, cartons, appliances, store fixtures or trade show materials. Before booking, we confirm the size, weight and how the freight loads, so the truck that arrives has room for all of it. If the receiver has no dock, we book a truck with a liftgate.

Box trucks come in more than one size, and the right one depends on the load. The three shown here cover most shipments, and the next section explains what box truck companies haul.

UP TO 3,000 LBS sprinter-vans

Sprinter Vans

A cargo van suits a few pallets or cartons that don’t need a full box. It is often quicker to book and fits tighter streets and docks. Vans can often pick up within hours of your call. They suit urgent parts, electronics and supplies that must stay enclosed.

Box Trucks

A 12 to 16 ft box truck takes a handful of pallets, store fixtures or appliances. Many have a liftgate for curbside and no-dock deliveries. Box trucks are common for retail restocks and showroom deliveries. Most fit commercial docks and many tight city streets.

Large Straight Trucks

A 22 to 26 ft straight truck moves a larger load of pallets or crates in one enclosed run. It is the last step before a full 53 ft trailer. Straight trucks often have a liftgate and room for a larger load of pallets. They suit plant transfers and bigger restocks.

Bigger than a van

A box truck carries loads that outgrow a cargo van but do not need a semi.

Box trucks What they haul

What box truck companies haul for shippers

From retail restocks to appliances to trade show exhibits, box truck companies move freight that sits between a van and a semi. A box truck is a straight truck with an enclosed cargo box mounted on the same chassis as the cab, with no separate trailer.

That build makes it easy to load at a dock or a curb. It also keeps freight dry and out of sight, which suits machine parts, store fixtures, cartons of inventory and job-site deliveries.

Most shippers reach for one when a load has outgrown a cargo van but would leave a 53 ft trailer mostly empty.

Truck sizes Sizing

Sizing the truck to your load

HotShotTrucking.com specializes in matching each load to the smallest truck that carries it safely. A box truck runs 12 to 16 ft with an interior about 94 in wide and 70 in high, and carries up to 5,000 lbs. A straight truck runs 22 to 26 ft, 96 in wide and 96 in high, and carries up to 9,000 lbs.

Before you book, measure the length, width and height of the freight and weigh it. Note how it will come off at the other end. A dock-height delivery needs no liftgate, while a curb or job-site drop usually does. Most trucks in this class are light enough to drive without a CDL.

Getting the size right the first time removes the risk of a truck showing up too small. Your shipment then stays with one truck and one driver from pickup to delivery.

A broker covers more ground

Couriers stay local and owner-operators have no backup. A broker finds a box truck near your pickup.

Company types Types

Four kinds of box truck companies

When you need a truck across town today, a local courier gives you a quick metro run with a small fleet. Courier fleets rarely leave their home market, so an out-of-state load can stall.

Owner-operator carriers run one to a few trucks under their own authority. They work well when their truck is close and free, but there is no backup if it breaks down. Directories and load boards list thousands of carriers. They are lists, though, and you still do the calling, checking and tracking yourself.

A freight broker books a licensed carrier for your load and manages it to delivery. HotShotTrucking.com is a broker, so we can find a box truck near your pickup in most of the country. We provide box trucks, straight trucks and larger equipment, and one dispatcher handles your shipment from start to finish.

Ready freight, right truck

Accurate details and freight ready at pickup keep a dedicated truck from waiting.

Cost

What moves the cost of a box truck

A box truck costs more to hire than a cargo van and less than a full tractor-trailer. As with most expedited freight, distance, weight, the size of truck and how soon you need it all affect the price.

A dedicated truck is priced for the whole truck, because your freight rides alone. That makes the right size matter. A load that fits a 16 ft box truck should not pay for a 26 ft straight truck.

The parts you control are simple. Give accurate dimensions and weight, have the freight packed and ready at pickup, and say up front whether the delivery site has a dock. Box trucks work well for palletized goods, cartons and equipment that need an enclosed ride. We match the truck to your freight and your deadline, so you pay for the truck the load needs.

How Supreme Court Ruling Is Reshaping Final Mile Risk Management

In this episode of On Air with Airfreight.com, host Kevin Carpenter sits down with Bryan Ice, a certified insurance counselor and co-founder of B3, a specialized insurance and risk management program built for final mile, same-day, courier, and customized delivery.

Bryan shares how B3 got its start, why final mile has always been a misunderstood niche for insurers, and what the recent Supreme Court ruling in Montgomery v. Carib Transport means for freight brokers and motor carriers going forward. We also get into how COVID reshaped final mile delivery for good, why thin-margin operators are headed for trouble, and how B3 is building a driver grading system to raise the bar on vetting.

Box Truck Shipping Questions Answered

What is a box truck?

A box truck is a medium-duty truck with an enclosed cargo box mounted on the same chassis as the cab. There is no separate trailer, so the truck is shorter and easier to maneuver than a tractor-trailer. The box keeps freight dry and out of sight. Box trucks carry palletized goods, cartons, appliances, furniture, store fixtures and equipment. They load at a dock, or at a curb with a liftgate. Shippers use them for loads too large for a cargo van but too small to fill a 53 ft trailer. Because they fit city streets and smaller docks, they handle many retail, job-site and business deliveries.

What is the difference between a box truck and a straight truck?

The two terms overlap. A straight truck is any truck whose cargo area is fixed to the same frame as the cab, rather than pulled as a separate trailer. A box truck is a straight truck with an enclosed box. In freight, people often use box truck for the smaller trucks, around 12 to 16 ft, and straight truck for the larger 22 to 26 ft trucks. The larger trucks have more interior height and payload. When you request a truck, the length and weight of your freight matter more than the name, so give the dimensions and let the truck be matched to them.

How many pallets fit in a 26 ft box truck?

It depends on the pallet size and whether the freight can be stacked. A standard pallet is 48 by 40 in. A 26 ft box truck is about 96 in wide inside, which leaves room for two standard pallets side by side. Laid out along the length of the box, that usually comes to about a dozen pallets on the floor. Oversized pallets, odd shapes or freight that cannot be turned will reduce that count. Weight can also be the limit before floor space is. Give the pallet count, pallet size, height and total weight when you ask for a truck, so the size can be checked against the load.

What is a liftgate and when is one needed?

A liftgate is a powered platform on the back of a truck that raises and lowers freight between the ground and the truck bed. It is needed when the pickup or delivery site has no loading dock, such as a storefront, a home, a job site or an office. Without one, heavy pallets would have to be unloaded by hand or with a forklift at ground level. Many box trucks and straight trucks have liftgates, but not all of them do. Say in advance whether either end of the move lacks a dock, so a truck with a liftgate is sent.

Does driving a box truck require a CDL?

Most box trucks do not require a commercial driver's license. Federal rules require a CDL for single vehicles above a set gross vehicle weight rating, and most box trucks and many straight trucks are built to stay under that rating. Larger straight trucks can exceed it, and then the driver needs a CDL. A driver hauling placarded hazardous materials needs a CDL with a hazmat endorsement, whatever the truck size. For a shipper, the practical point is that the carrier must match the driver's license to the truck and the freight. You can confirm a carrier's records through FMCSA.

What is the difference between a box truck carrier and a freight broker?

A box truck carrier owns or leases its trucks and employs or contracts the drivers who haul freight. It holds motor carrier operating authority from FMCSA. A freight broker does not haul freight itself. It arranges the move by booking a licensed carrier for the load, then manages the shipment until delivery. A broker holds its own broker authority. Shippers use carriers directly when they know a truck nearby, and use brokers when they need help finding a truck quickly, covering a long or out-of-town run, or getting a backup when a truck falls through.

What is a USDOT number?

A USDOT number is the identifier the U.S. Department of Transportation assigns to companies that operate commercial vehicles in interstate commerce. It links to the company's safety records, inspections, crash history and registration. Carriers that haul freight for hire across state lines also need operating authority, shown by an MC number. A shipper can look up either number in FMCSA's public records to see whether the company is registered, whether its authority is active and how its safety record looks. Checking this takes a few minutes and is one of the simplest ways to screen any trucking company before booking.

Can a box truck carry partial loads?

Yes. Many box truck loads are partial in the sense that the freight does not fill the truck. With a dedicated box truck, the truck carries only your freight, even if there is room left, and drives it straight to delivery. That is different from LTL shipping, where freight from several shippers shares a trailer and moves through terminals. LTL can cost less for small, non-urgent freight, but it involves more handling and less predictable timing. A dedicated box truck suits partial loads that are urgent, fragile or need to arrive on a set schedule.

What is dock-height delivery?

Dock-height delivery means the truck backs up to a loading dock that sits at about the same height as the truck bed. Freight rolls straight off on a pallet jack or forklift, with no need to lower it to the ground. Warehouses, distribution centers and many factories have docks. Stores, homes, offices and job sites usually do not, which is when a liftgate is needed. Some box trucks sit lower than a standard dock, so dock plates or levelers bridge the gap. Telling the dispatcher whether each end has a dock helps match the right truck.

Can a box truck haul hazardous materials?

A box truck can haul many hazardous materials if the carrier and driver meet the federal rules for that freight. Depending on the material and quantity, that can mean hazmat registration, placards on the truck, proper packaging and labels, shipping papers and a driver with a hazmat endorsement. Some materials cannot travel together in the same box. The shipper is responsible for classifying, packaging and documenting the freight correctly. When you request a truck, state the hazard class, UN number and quantity, so a carrier qualified for that load can be booked.
