BOX TRUCK SHIPPING

The Right Size Truck for a Mid-Size Load

A few pallets rarely justify a 53 ft trailer, and an LTL shipment can sit in terminals for days. A box truck carries the load on its own and drives it straight there.

HotShotTrucking.com books dedicated box trucks and straight trucks for freight across the country. One dispatcher stays with the shipment from quote to delivery.

Before booking, we ask about the freight’s size, weight and how it loads, and whether the receiver has a dock. That decides the truck size and whether you need a liftgate. Once it is moving, one dispatcher tracks the load until it is signed for.

Box truck shipping covers more than one truck size. The three shown here handle most loads, and the next section explains what box truck shipping covers.

UP TO 3,000 LBS sprinter-vans

Sprinter Vans

A cargo van suits a few cartons or a pallet or two that don’t need a full box. It is often the quickest truck to book. Vans can often pick up within hours of your call. They keep freight locked and dry the whole way.

Box Trucks

A 12 to 16 ft box truck takes a handful of pallets, appliances or store fixtures. Many have a liftgate for curbside and no-dock deliveries. Box trucks are common for retail restocks, office deliveries and trade show freight. Most fit commercial docks and many tight city streets.

Large Straight Trucks

A 22 to 26 ft straight truck moves a larger load of pallets or crates in one enclosed run. It is the step before a full 53 ft trailer. Straight trucks suit plant transfers and larger restocks. Many come with a liftgate.

Box truck shipping What it covers

What box truck shipping covers

A box truck has an enclosed cargo box mounted on the same chassis as the cab. When you book one, it carries only your freight.

Box trucks ship pallets, cartons, appliances, store fixtures, equipment and trade show materials. This page is about shipping freight by box truck. If you need to move a box truck itself or find loads for one, the FAQ points you in the right direction.

Box truck
Rule of thumb

Weight before floor space

Dense freight often hits the weight limit before it fills the floor.

Sizing

Sizing the box truck

When a smaller box truck isn't the right fit for your shipment, a straight truck might be the answer. A box truck runs 12 to 16 ft long, 94 in wide and 70 in high inside, and carries up to 5,000 lbs. A straight truck runs 22 to 26 ft, 96 in wide and 96 in high, and carries up to 9,000 lbs.

Pallet fit depends on pallet size and whether freight can be stacked, and weight often limits a load before floor space does. Most trucks in this class run without a CDL driver, while heavier straight trucks may need one.

Measure each piece, weigh the load and count the pallets before you book. We match the truck to those numbers, so the one that arrives has room for your freight.

Alternatives Other options

Box truck, van, straight truck or hot shot

Skip paying for more truck than your freight needs. We weigh the options with you and book the one that fits the load and the deadline.

A Sprinter van carries up to 3,000 lbs and is the quickest to dispatch for small urgent freight. A large straight truck carries up to 9,000 lbs when the load outgrows a box truck. A hot shot carries up to 16,000 lbs on an open deck for freight that loads by forklift or crane. A 53 ft dry van carries up to 42,000 lbs when the load fills a trailer. As with most expedited freight, distance, weight, truck type and timing all affect the cost.

We match the truck to your load, so you get the right size the first time. Your shipment then stays with one truck from pickup to delivery.

Delivery options

Delivery options and no-dock sites

When a store, office, home or job site has no loading dock, a box truck with a liftgate gives you a clean drop. The liftgate lowers pallets from the truck bed to the ground, so heavy freight comes off without a forklift.

Some deliveries need more. Inside delivery means the driver moves the freight past the door to a set spot. Residential and job-site deliveries often need appointments and clear directions. Dock-height delivery is the simplest, because freight rolls straight onto the dock.

Tell us about both ends when you book: dock or no dock, inside delivery, appointments and access. We plan the truck around those details to make sure the delivery goes smoothly.

Why it matters

Fewer handoffs

Freight that rides alone is handled less and arrives on a predictable schedule.

Dedicated Dedicated truck

A dedicated truck, not a shared one

A booked box truck carries only your freight, smaller than a full trailer but just as direct. It picks up at your dock and drives straight to the destination. It does not move through terminals or share space with other shipments.

That means fewer handoffs, less chance of damage and timing you can plan around.

HotShotTrucking.com books dedicated box trucks from licensed carriers. We match the truck to your freight to make sure it arrives as planned.

How Supreme Court Ruling Is Reshaping Final Mile Risk Management

In this episode of On Air with Airfreight.com, host Kevin Carpenter sits down with Bryan Ice, a certified insurance counselor and co-founder of B3, a specialized insurance and risk management program built for final mile, same-day, courier, and customized delivery.

Bryan shares how B3 got its start, why final mile has always been a misunderstood niche for insurers, and what the recent Supreme Court ruling in Montgomery v. Carib Transport means for freight brokers and motor carriers going forward. We also get into how COVID reshaped final mile delivery for good, why thin-margin operators are headed for trouble, and how B3 is building a driver grading system to raise the bar on vetting.

Box Truck Shipping Questions Answered

How much does box truck shipping cost?

The cost of box truck shipping depends mainly on distance, the size of truck, how soon you need the freight moved and what the delivery involves. A dedicated box truck is booked for the whole truck, because it carries only your freight, so choosing the right size matters. Extra services such as a liftgate, inside delivery or a delivery appointment can also affect the cost. The best way to get an accurate figure is to share the pallet count, weight, dimensions, addresses and dates when you ask for a quote.

How many pallets fit in a box truck?

It depends on the truck length, the pallet size and whether the freight can be stacked. A 12 to 16 ft box truck usually takes a handful of standard pallets, while a 22 to 26 ft straight truck, about 96 in wide inside, fits two standard 48 by 40 in pallets side by side along most of its length. Oversized pallets, odd shapes or freight that cannot be turned reduce the count. Weight can limit a load before floor space does, so share both the pallet count and the total weight when booking.

What is the weight limit of a box truck?

A 12 to 16 ft box truck carries up to about 5,000 lbs of freight, and a 22 to 26 ft straight truck up to about 9,000 lbs. The exact limit depends on the truck's weight rating and its own weight with equipment such as a liftgate. Going over the limit is unsafe and illegal, so dispatchers check weight before booking. If your freight is heavier, a hot shot carries up to 16,000 lbs on an open deck, and a 53 ft dry van carries up to 42,000 lbs. Accurate weights prevent the wrong truck being sent.

Do box trucks need a CDL driver?

Most box trucks do not need a CDL driver, because they are built to stay under the federal weight rating that triggers a commercial license. Heavier straight trucks can exceed that rating, and then the driver needs a CDL. Drivers hauling placarded hazardous materials need a CDL with a hazmat endorsement, whatever the truck size. For a shipper, the practical point is that the carrier must match the driver's license to the truck and the freight, which can be confirmed through the carrier's records with FMCSA.

Can a box truck deliver to a site with no dock?

Yes. Many box trucks and straight trucks have liftgates, which lower freight from the truck bed to the ground, so heavy pallets can be delivered without a loading dock. That suits stores, offices, homes and job sites. Not every truck has a liftgate, so say in advance if either end lacks a dock. Some sites also need inside delivery, an appointment or extra help with heavy items. Sharing those details at booking lets the right truck and plan be arranged before the driver arrives.

Is a box truck cheaper than LTL for a few pallets?

Sometimes, but it depends on timing and distance. LTL can cost less for a few pallets when the delivery date is flexible, because the trailer space is shared with other shippers. The trade-off is terminal handling and less predictable timing. A dedicated box truck costs more for the same freight but carries only your load and drives direct, so it suits urgent, fragile or appointment-bound deliveries. Many shippers use LTL for routine freight and a box truck when the delivery date matters.

When is a cargo van enough?

A cargo van, such as a Sprinter van, is enough when the freight is small: parts, cartons, documents or about 3 or 4 standard pallets, up to about 3,000 lbs. Vans are quicker to dispatch, fit tight city streets and deliver easily to sites without docks because their cargo floor is low. If the freight is heavier, taller or needs more pallets than a van holds, a box truck is the next step. Give the dimensions and weight, and the right vehicle can be matched to the load.

Is a box truck load dedicated?

When you book a dedicated box truck, the truck carries only your freight. It picks up at your location and drives directly to the destination, without stopping to load or unload other shipments and without terminal transfers. That differs from LTL, where your pallets share a trailer and move through sorting terminals. Dedicated service reduces handling and keeps timing predictable. It also means you pay for the truck rather than for a share of the space, which is why sizing the truck correctly matters.

What is a liftgate?

A liftgate is a powered platform at the back of a truck that raises and lowers freight between the ground and the truck bed. It lets heavy pallets come off the truck at sites without a loading dock, such as storefronts, offices, homes and job sites. Liftgates have their own weight limits, so very heavy single pieces may still need a forklift. Many box trucks and straight trucks have liftgates, but not all of them do, so ask for one when booking if either end of the move lacks a dock.

What if I need to move a box truck itself or find loads for one?

This page is about shipping freight by box truck. If you need to move a box truck itself, for example after buying one, that is vehicle transport, usually handled by auto transport carriers or by driving the truck. If you own a box truck and want loads, owner-operators usually work with freight brokers, load boards and carriers that lease on independent trucks, with the right registration, operating authority and insurance in place. FMCSA publishes the registration requirements for operating commercially across state lines.
