EXPRESS TRUCKING

A Truck Dispatched Now, Not on the Next Run

When freight misses its scheduled truck, waiting for the next one can cost a day or more. Express trucking skips that wait by putting one truck on the load as soon as it is ready.

HotShotTrucking.com books the right vehicle for the freight, from a cargo van to a full trailer. One dispatcher stays with the shipment from quote to delivery.

Fast dispatch depends on good information. We ask what the freight is, how it loads and when it has to arrive before the truck is booked. That way the right truck arrives ready to load, and one dispatcher stays with it until delivery.

The three trucks shown here handle most express loads. The next section explains what express trucking means and how it differs from standard service.

PARTS AND CARTONS sprinter-vans

Sprinter Vans

A cargo van carries up to 3,000 lbs and is often the quickest truck to dispatch. It drives straight to the receiver, with no hub stops. Vans keep freight locked and dry the whole way. On long runs, two drivers can keep them moving overnight.

OPEN-DECK LOADS hot-shot-truck

Hot Shot Trucking

A pickup with a gooseneck flatbed takes up to 16,000 lbs of equipment and materials. It leaves as soon as the load is secured. Hot shots can reach job sites and rural plants that a semi cannot. If the load is too big, we book a full flatbed.

FULL TRAILERS 53-ft-dry-vans-1

53' Dry Vans

A 53 ft dry van moves up to 42,000 lbs of enclosed freight on one dedicated run. On long trips, two drivers keep it moving. Dry vans suit palletized freight that needs to stay out of the weather. A dedicated van skips the terminal stops of LTL.

Express trucking What it means

What express trucking means

Many people searching this term are looking for a company with Express in its name. This page explains the express trucking service, and any company can be checked in FMCSA records.

Standard trucking runs on the carrier's schedule. LTL shipments share a trailer and move through terminals, and a regular truckload waits for a truck on its usual lane. Express trucking is booked for one load, dispatched as soon as possible and driven straight to the destination.

The truck carries only your freight. That is called exclusive use, and it cuts handling and waiting time. Nothing is added along the way.

Straight truck (box truck)
Rule of thumb

Size sets the service

The weight and size of the load decide which express vehicle fits.

Service levels

Express service levels and equipment

Express trucking is not one truck. It is a set of service levels matched to the size of the load.

For small freight, a Sprinter van carries up to 3,000 lbs and a box truck up to 5,000 lbs. In a metro area, either can often move the same day. A straight truck takes up to 9,000 lbs of pallets, usually with a liftgate. A hot shot carries up to 16,000 lbs of equipment on an open deck.

For full loads, a dedicated 53 ft dry van takes up to 42,000 lbs and a full flatbed up to 48,000 lbs. On long runs, two drivers can take turns so the truck keeps moving. HotShotTrucking.com matches the service level to your freight, so you are not paying for more truck than you need.

Distance and deadline decide

Regional urgent loads suit a truck; long distances with tight deadlines may need air.

Mode choice Truck, air or LTL

Express trucking, air freight or LTL

With the service level chosen, the next question is whether a truck is the right mode at all.

LTL suits small shipments that are not urgent. It costs less because you share the trailer, but the freight is handled at terminals and timing is less predictable.

Express trucking suits urgent loads on regional runs and many long ones. Transit depends on distance, traffic, appointments and federal limits on driver hours, and two drivers extend how far a truck can go in a day.

When the distance is long and the deadline is measured in hours, air freight can beat any truck. HotShotTrucking.com can arrange air when a truck is too slow, so you get the mode that meets your deadline.

Worth knowing

Vehicle and distance first

The truck size and the miles set most of the cost of an express load.

Cost What drives cost

What drives express trucking cost

Express trucking costs more than LTL because you are paying for a whole truck and a direct run. In return you get speed, less handling and a clear delivery time.

The size of the vehicle and the distance set most of the cost. Timing matters too, since a truck needed within the hour, overnight or on a weekend is harder to find. A liftgate, two drivers on a long run and permits for oversize freight also add to it. When truck capacity is tight across the market, prices rise for everyone.

The best way to control cost is to book the smallest vehicle that fits and give complete details up front. HotShotTrucking.com quotes the truck your load needs and confirms the details before it moves.

Express Trucking Questions Answered

What is express trucking?

Express trucking is a service that moves urgent freight on a dedicated truck, booked for one load, dispatched as soon as possible and driven straight to the destination. The truck carries only that shipper's freight, with no terminal stops, so there is less handling and timing is more predictable. Vehicles range from cargo vans and box trucks to hot shots, flatbeds and 53 ft trailers. Many carriers have Express in their names, but the service itself is offered by many carriers and brokers. Any company can be checked in FMCSA records before you book.

How is express trucking different from LTL or truckload?

LTL, or less than truckload, combines freight from several shippers in one trailer and moves it through terminals, which can cost less but adds handling and less predictable timing. Standard truckload reserves a whole trailer, but the carrier schedules it around its own lanes and trucks. Express trucking is booked for one urgent load and dispatched as soon as a suitable truck is free, in whatever size the freight needs. It drives straight through. The trade-off is cost: you pay for the whole vehicle and the priority, in return for speed and control.

How fast can an express truck pick up?

It depends on where the freight is and what vehicle it needs. Cargo vans and box trucks are the most common express vehicles, so one is often available near a metro pickup within a short time when the freight is ready. Specialized trucks such as flatbeds, and rural pickups, usually take longer to arrange. Night, weekend and holiday pickups are possible with a dispatcher who answers around the clock. The quickest bookings start with complete details, so the dispatcher can book a truck near the pickup on the first call.

What does express trucking cost?

Express trucking costs more than shared freight because one truck is reserved for one load and driven straight through. The size of the vehicle and the distance set most of the cost. How soon you need the truck, after-hours or weekend pickups, a liftgate, two drivers on long runs and permits for oversize freight also affect it. Market conditions matter as well, since tight capacity raises prices. The best way to get an accurate quote is to share the addresses, dimensions, weight, pallet count, site hours and deadline at the start.

When should I use hot shot instead of a two-driver truckload?

Use a hot shot when the load is urgent equipment or materials up to about 16,000 lbs that can ride on an open deck. It is a smaller vehicle, so it is often quicker to book and costs less than a full truck. Use a dedicated truckload with two drivers when the freight fills most of a 53 ft trailer or a full flatbed and must cover a long distance quickly. Two drivers take turns so the truck can keep moving within federal hours limits. For small enclosed freight, a cargo van is usually the better express option.

How do I verify a trucking company's USDOT and MC number?

Ask the company for its USDOT number and, for interstate for-hire freight, its MC number. Look both up in FMCSA's public records, including the SAFER company snapshot. The listing shows the legal name, address, whether operating authority is active and the insurance on file. Compare the name and phone number with the company you are speaking with, since fraudsters sometimes borrow a real carrier's identity. Then read the safety data and inspection history. If you book through a broker, check its broker authority too and ask which carrier will haul the load.

Can I track an express shipment?

Yes, in most cases. Many trucks report GPS location through electronic logging devices or tracking apps, and dispatchers send updates at pickup, in transit and at delivery. Ask before booking how updates will reach you, how often you will hear, and who to call if something changes. At delivery, the receiver signs the bill of lading or an electronic record, which becomes the proof of delivery. Keep it with your shipping records. A single dispatcher who stays with the load makes tracking simpler, because you always know who to ask.

How are freight claims and OS&D handled?

OS&D stands for over, short and damaged. When freight arrives with more pieces than expected, fewer pieces, or damage, the receiver should note the exception on the bill of lading before signing and take photos. That written record is the starting point for a cargo claim. The claim is filed in writing with the carrier, usually within a set time limit, with the bill of lading, photos, invoices showing the freight's value and repair or replacement costs. Express shipments have fewer claims because the freight is loaded once and not handled at terminals.

Is express trucking cheaper than air freight?

Usually, yes, for loads that a truck can deliver in time. A dedicated truck is priced around the vehicle and the miles, while air freight is priced around weight, size and speed, with trucking still needed at each end. For regional distances, express trucking is often as fast as air once you add airport time, and it costs less. Over long distances with a deadline measured in hours, air may be the only option that works. Comparing both for the specific load is the best way to decide which one meets the deadline at the lower cost.

What is the meaning of freight transportation?

Freight transportation is the movement of goods, rather than people, from one place to another for business. It covers road freight by truck, rail, air and ocean shipping, and it includes everything from a single box to a full trainload. In the United States, trucks carry most freight because they can reach almost any address. Within trucking, freight moves as LTL, full truckload, expedited or express, and specialized loads such as flatbed and oversize. Express trucking is the part of freight transportation built for shipments that cannot wait.
