FREIGHT TRUCKING

The Right Truck for Business Freight of Every Size

Business freight comes in every shape: a crate of parts, a few pallets of stock, a full trailer of materials. The truck that fits one load can waste money or time on the next.

HotShotTrucking.com books the right truck for each shipment, from a Sprinter van to a 53 ft trailer. Your freight goes from your dock to its destination with no transfers, and one dispatcher stays with it the whole way.

Before booking, we confirm the freight’s size, weight and loading method, and whether the receiver has a dock. That decides which truck you need and whether it needs a liftgate. Once the truck is moving, you get updates from the same dispatcher until delivery.

These three trucks handle most business freight. The next section explains what freight is and what a freight truck company does.

SMALL SHIPMENTS sprinter-vans

Sprinter Vans

A cargo van carries up to 3,000 lbs of parts or cartons. It suits urgent freight that is too big for parcel but too small for a truck. Vans can often pick up within hours of your call. They keep freight locked and dry the whole way.

PALLETS AND RESTOCKS box-trucks

Box Trucks

A 12 to 16 ft box truck takes a handful of pallets, up to 5,000 lbs. Many have a liftgate for stores and sites without a dock. Box trucks fit most commercial docks and many curbside deliveries. They suit retail restocks and plant-to-plant transfers.

53' Dry Vans

A 53 ft dry van moves up to 42,000 lbs of palletized freight. It runs as a dedicated truck, straight from dock to dock. Dry vans suit palletized retail and consumer goods. On long runs, two drivers can keep the truck moving.

Freight trucking What it means

What freight and freight truck companies are

In shipping, freight means commercial goods moved in bulk, on pallets or as equipment, as opposed to small parcels or personal belongings.

A freight truck company moves that freight by road, or arranges the move with a licensed carrier. Manufacturers use one for parts and materials, distributors for stock, retailers for store restocks and contractors for equipment. Trucks carry most of the value of US freight, so the company you choose touches much of your supply chain.

Services differ by size and speed

Each service suits a different load size, deadline and kind of handling.

Services

The services a freight truck company offers

When speed counts but a full trailer would be wasted, an expedited van or box truck is a strong option for your freight. Full truckload reserves a whole trailer for one shipper, while LTL combines small shipments from many shippers and moves them through terminals.

Hot shots carry open-deck partial loads, and flatbeds carry heavy freight that loads from above, with permits when it is oversize. Dedicated trucks carry only one shipper's load and drive direct, with two drivers on long urgent runs. Hazmat freight needs placards, proper shipping papers and drivers with the right endorsement.

We match each load to the service that moves it best. Your shipment then stays with one truck and one driver from pickup to delivery.

Weigh it first

An accurate weight is the quickest route to the right truck.

Equipment Choosing a truck

Choosing the right service and truck

A Sprinter van carries up to 3,000 lbs, smaller than a box truck at 5,000 lbs but quicker to dispatch. A straight truck carries up to 9,000 lbs, often with a liftgate for sites without docks.

For open-deck freight, a hot shot carries up to 16,000 lbs on a deck up to about 40 ft. A 53 ft dry van carries up to 42,000 lbs of enclosed freight. A full flatbed carries up to 48,000 lbs of freight that loads from above. Pick by weight, size, deadline and how the freight loads at each end.

Measure and weigh your freight before you call. We match the truck to those numbers, so the one that arrives can carry your load.

Freight Truck Company Questions Answered

What does freight mean in shipping?

In shipping, freight means commercial goods transported in bulk, on pallets, in crates or as equipment, usually between businesses. It differs from parcels, which are individual packages sent through sorting networks, and from household goods moved for families. Freight can move by truck, rail, air or ocean, and the term also refers to the charge for moving it. In trucking, freight ranges from a single pallet in a van to a full 53 ft trailer or an oversize machine on a flatbed.

Who is the biggest freight company?

The largest freight companies in the United States include parcel networks, large truckload and LTL carriers, intermodal operators and logistics providers, and rankings change with revenue, fleet size and acquisitions. Size is usually measured by revenue, power units and drivers. For shippers, the biggest company is not always the best fit. Large carriers suit steady freight on regular lanes, while urgent, small or unusual loads are often better served by a dedicated truck booked for that shipment. Checking any company's authority, insurance and safety record works the same way regardless of its size.

What is the difference between FTL and LTL?

Full truckload, or FTL, reserves an entire trailer for one shipper, which is picked up and driven straight to the destination. Less than truckload, or LTL, combines freight from several shippers in one trailer, with stops at terminals where freight is sorted and moved to other trucks. LTL can cost less for small, non-urgent shipments, and it uses freight classes to price the space. FTL suits large loads, fragile freight and tight deadlines because there is less handling. For small loads that are urgent, a dedicated van or box truck offers direct service without paying for a full trailer.

When is hot shot or expedited better than a full truckload?

Hot shot or expedited service is better when the load is smaller than a full trailer and needs to arrive quickly. A dedicated van, box truck or hot shot carries only your freight and drives straight to the destination, without paying for a whole 53 ft trailer. A full truckload makes more sense when the freight fills most of a trailer. Distance, weight, deadline and how the freight loads all help decide which service fits best. When a deadline is fixed, a dedicated truck also avoids the terminal handling that shared services involve.

What is a USDOT number?

A USDOT number is the identifier the U.S. Department of Transportation assigns to companies that operate commercial vehicles in interstate commerce. It links to the company's registration, inspections, crash history and safety data. Carriers that haul freight for hire across state lines also need operating authority, shown by an MC number, and brokers hold separate broker authority. Any shipper can look up a USDOT or MC number in FMCSA's public records. Checking it before booking shows whether a company is registered, what kind of authority it holds and whether that authority is active.

How much cargo insurance does a freight carrier carry?

Cargo insurance limits vary by carrier and are set by the carrier's policy, not by one federal amount. Many shippers and brokers require minimum cargo coverage before booking, and high-value freight may need more. Ask for a certificate of insurance showing the cargo limit, the policy dates and the insurer, and compare the limit with the value of your freight. If the freight is worth more than the limit, ask about additional coverage before the load moves. Keep a copy of the certificate with your shipping records.

Can I track my freight shipment?

Yes. Most freight companies and brokers share updates by phone, email or an online link, often based on GPS or driver check-ins. A dedicated truck that drives direct makes tracking simpler because the freight stays with one driver. Ask before booking how often you will get updates and who to call if plans change. At delivery, you should receive proof of delivery, usually the signed bill of lading, to confirm the freight arrived. Updates matter most when a delivery time is tight or a site needs notice before arrival.

Can freight trucks haul hazmat?

Yes, when the carrier and driver meet federal rules for that material. Depending on the hazard class and quantity, that can mean hazmat registration, placards on the truck, proper packaging and labels, shipping papers and a driver with a hazmat endorsement. Some materials cannot travel together in the same vehicle. The shipper is responsible for classifying, packaging and documenting the freight correctly. When booking, give the hazard class, UN number and quantity so a qualified carrier can be assigned. Hazmat loads also need emergency response information to travel with the shipment.

What is the difference between a freight broker and a carrier?

A carrier owns or leases trucks and employs or contracts the drivers who haul freight, under motor carrier operating authority. A freight broker arranges transportation for others by booking a licensed carrier for the load and managing the shipment through delivery, under separate broker authority. The broker is the shipper's contact for the move, while the carrier supplies the truck and driver. Shippers use carriers directly when they know a truck nearby, and use brokers when they need a truck found quickly, a different truck size, or a backup when a truck falls through.

What is proof of delivery?

Proof of delivery, or POD, is the record that a shipment reached its destination and who received it. It is usually the bill of lading signed by the receiver, with a printed name, date and notes on the freight's condition. Electronic signatures and photos are also common. Proof of delivery closes out the shipment and supports invoicing. If freight arrives damaged or short, note it on the proof of delivery before signing, which is the first step in any claim.
