In short

Two meanings, one idea

Urgent freight, sent on its own, right away.

Hot shot Two meanings

What hot shot delivery means

Hot shot delivery has two meanings. In general use, a hot shot is any rush delivery: something sent right away, on its own, because it is needed now. In trucking, a hot shot is a specific truck: a heavy-duty pickup pulling a flatbed or gooseneck trailer, dispatched for one urgent load. This page is for shippers; drivers looking to start out or find loads will find that on load boards and driver resources.

The two meanings share the same idea. A hot shot is sent for your freight alone, leaves as soon as it is loaded and drives straight to the receiver, without waiting to fill a larger truck.

HotShotTrucking.com dispatches hot shot trucks for heavy urgent freight, and smaller or larger trucks when the load calls for them.

The truck The hot shot truck

The hot shot truck

A hot shot truck is a heavy-duty pickup paired with a flatbed or gooseneck trailer. It typically carries up to about 16,000 lbs on a deck of up to about 40 ft, which places it between a straight truck and a full tractor-trailer. Because it is smaller than a semi, it is often quicker to dispatch and easier to take onto job sites, farms and rural roads.

The open deck means freight is loaded from the side or top by forklift or crane, then secured with straps or chains. Freight that must stay dry is covered with tarps.

That combination of capacity, speed and reach is why hot shots are a favorite for heavy parts and equipment that cannot wait. HotShotTrucking.com matches each load to a hot shot with the right deck and securement.

Worker loading a truck
The rule

Heavy, urgent, under a full load

The freight decides the truck.

Choosing When it fits

When a hot shot fits

A hot shot beats a full semi when the freight is heavy and urgent but well short of a full load, such as a single machine, a bundle of pipe or a pallet of heavy parts. There is no need to wait for a larger truck or fill the space, and the hot shot can leave as soon as it is loaded.

A smaller truck fits better in other cases. A Sprinter van is quicker for a few boxes or a pallet or two. A box truck or straight truck suits freight that must stay enclosed, or deliveries that need a liftgate at sites without a forklift. A full load is best on a 53 ft dry van or a flatbed.

The weight, the size of the largest piece, whether the freight must stay enclosed and how it will be unloaded decide the truck. HotShotTrucking.com makes that match for each load.

The upshot

Heavy freight that stops work

Hot shots serve industries where waiting costs most.

Industries Freight and industries

Freight and industries

Hot shot delivery companies move the heavy freight that stops work when it is missing. Oil and gas operators wait on pumps, valves, pipe and tools at well sites. Construction crews wait on steel, materials and equipment. Farms wait on equipment parts during planting and harvest, when a broken machine cannot sit idle.

Manufacturers send heavy parts and tooling to keep lines running, and equipment dealers deliver machines and attachments to customers. Energy and utility crews move transformers, cable reels and parts to job sites after storms and outages.

What these loads share is weight, urgency and often a remote destination. A hot shot can reach a lease site or a field on rural roads that a full semi would struggle with, which is why hot shot delivery companies serve these industries most.

Booking What to look for

What to look for and booking

Shippers looking for hot shot delivery companies usually want a few practical things. A quick answer comes first, since urgent freight cannot wait for a callback. Then the right truck: a hot shot with the deck length and securement the load needs, or an honest suggestion when a different truck fits better. Clear updates during the run and proof of delivery at the end round it out.

To book, share what the freight is, the weight, the dimensions of the largest piece, how it is packed, the pickup and delivery addresses, the deadline and the contacts at each end. Note how it will be loaded and unloaded, such as by forklift or crane, and any site access details.

HotShotTrucking.com uses those details to dispatch the right truck and keeps the shipper updated until delivery.

First time customer

First time customer. Communication was fantastic throughout the entire process and is sincerely appreciated. Our customer shared an update this morning that the driver texted a little before 5 am that he would be there at 8. That’s exactly when he pulled in. She said it was a much easier process than she ever thought it would be and was very grateful.

Glad I don't need all the time, but when I do...

AirFreight handled my unusual situation (my perspective) seamlessly. In response to my first call for assistance, a professional (kind, even) HUMAN answered immediately. From there, communication at every stage was clear and thorough. AirFreight is an example of how a service operation is supposed to work.

Zero problems, ahead of schedule

My only criticism is that there isn’t an option for more than five stars. I’ve been burned by more hotshot brokers than I can count, and this is the first time I’ve had a shipment show up ahead of schedule with absolutely zero damage or tampering. I could not recommend AirFreight more strongly, we will be using them exclusively going forward. A bit higher priced but frankly inexpensive compared to the problems caused by prior shippers. 11/10, no notes.

Hot Shot Delivery Companies Questions Answered

What do hot shot delivery companies do?

Hot shot delivery companies dispatch a truck for one urgent load and drive it straight to the receiver, without waiting to fill a larger truck. Most use hot shot trucks, which are heavy-duty pickups pulling flatbed or gooseneck trailers, for heavy parts and equipment. Many also dispatch smaller vans and trucks, or full tractor-trailers, when the load calls for them. Sharing complete details when booking helps avoid delays. A provider can confirm what is possible for a specific shipment. Asking these questions before booking avoids surprises later.

What does hot shot delivery mean?

Hot shot delivery has two meanings. In general use, it means any rush delivery sent right away and on its own. In trucking, it means a delivery made by a hot shot truck, a heavy-duty pickup pulling a flatbed or gooseneck trailer. In both cases, the freight is sent for one shipper alone, leaves as soon as it is loaded and runs direct. A provider can confirm what is possible for a specific shipment. Asking these questions before booking avoids surprises later. Planning ahead makes the delivery go more smoothly.

What is a hot shot truck?

A hot shot truck is a heavy-duty pickup paired with a flatbed or gooseneck trailer, used to move heavy urgent freight. It typically carries up to about 16,000 lbs on a deck of up to about 40 ft. Being smaller than a semi, it is often quicker to dispatch and easier to take onto job sites, farms and rural roads. Asking these questions before booking avoids surprises later. Planning ahead makes the delivery go more smoothly. Sharing complete details when booking helps avoid delays.

How much can a hot shot carry?

A hot shot truck can typically carry up to about 16,000 lbs on a deck of up to about 40 ft, depending on the truck, the trailer and how the weight is spread. That suits single machines, bundles of pipe, pallets of heavy parts and similar loads. For heavier or larger loads, a full flatbed carrying up to about 48,000 lbs fits better. Planning ahead makes the delivery go more smoothly. Sharing complete details when booking helps avoid delays. A provider can confirm what is possible for a specific shipment.

When is a hot shot better than a semi?

A hot shot is better than a semi when the freight is heavy and urgent but well short of a full load, such as one machine, a bundle of pipe or a few pallets of heavy parts. It can leave as soon as it is loaded, without waiting to fill space, and it handles job sites and rural roads that a full tractor-trailer may struggle with. Sharing complete details when booking helps avoid delays. A provider can confirm what is possible for a specific shipment. Asking these questions before booking avoids surprises later.

When is a smaller truck better than a hot shot?

A smaller truck is better when the freight is light, small or must stay enclosed. A Sprinter van is quicker for a few boxes or a pallet or two. A box truck or straight truck suits freight that must stay dry, or deliveries that need a liftgate at sites without a forklift. The weight, size and unloading method decide which truck fits. A provider can confirm what is possible for a specific shipment. Asking these questions before booking avoids surprises later. Planning ahead makes the delivery go more smoothly.

What freight do hot shot delivery companies move?

Hot shot delivery companies move heavy urgent freight such as machinery, pumps, valves, pipe, tools and oilfield equipment, steel and construction materials, farm equipment parts, heavy manufacturing parts and tooling, and equipment for utility crews. Much of it is loaded by forklift or crane onto the open deck and strapped or chained down, with tarps when it must stay dry. Asking these questions before booking avoids surprises later. Planning ahead makes the delivery go more smoothly. Sharing complete details when booking helps avoid delays.

Which industries use hot shot delivery?

Industries that use hot shot delivery include oil and gas, construction, agriculture, manufacturing, equipment dealers and energy and utilities. What these industries share is heavy freight that stops work when it is missing, often bound for remote sites such as well pads, fields and job sites, where a quick, smaller truck has an advantage over a full semi. Planning ahead makes the delivery go more smoothly. Sharing complete details when booking helps avoid delays. A provider can confirm what is possible for a specific shipment.

What should I look for in a hot shot delivery company?

Look for a quick answer when you call, the right truck for the load, including the deck length and securement it needs, and an honest suggestion when a different truck would fit better. Clear updates during the run and proof of delivery at the end matter too. A company that also dispatches vans and full trucks can cover more of your loads. Sharing complete details when booking helps avoid delays. A provider can confirm what is possible for a specific shipment. Asking these questions before booking avoids surprises later.

How do I book a hot shot delivery?

To book a hot shot delivery, share what the freight is, the weight, the dimensions of the largest piece, how it is packed, the pickup and delivery addresses, the deadline and the contacts at each end. Note how the freight will be loaded and unloaded, such as by forklift or crane, and any site access details. A truck is then matched and dispatched. A provider can confirm what is possible for a specific shipment. Asking these questions before booking avoids surprises later. Planning ahead makes the delivery go more smoothly.
