PREMIUM TRUCKING

A Level of Service Above Shared Freight

Critical freight can’t share a trailer, sit at a terminal or arrive late. The cost of a missed delivery is usually far higher than the cost of the truck.

HotShotTrucking.com books a dedicated truck that carries only your load and drives straight to the destination. One dispatcher stays with it from quote to delivery, with two drivers on long runs when the deadline needs it.

Premium service is as much about communication as speed. You get one dispatcher who knows the load, updates without having to ask, and early warning if anything changes. When the freight arrives, we send proof of delivery so you can close the loop with your customer.

Premium service comes in every truck size. The three shown here handle most critical loads, and the next section explains what premium trucking really means.

SMALL CRITICAL LOADS sprinter-vans

Sprinter Vans

A cargo van carries up to 3,000 lbs of parts, electronics or medical supplies, locked and dry. It drives straight through, with no hub stops. Vans can often pick up within hours of your call. On long runs, two drivers can keep them moving overnight.

CAREFUL HANDLING large-straight-trucks-1

Large Straight Trucks

A 22 to 26 ft straight truck takes up to 9,000 lbs of pallets or crates. It suits high-value freight that needs space and cover. Straight trucks often have a liftgate for receivers without a dock. They suit trade show, medical and electronics freight.

Straight Truck Services about Careful handling
FULL TRAILERS 53-ft-dry-vans-1

53' Dry Vans

A 53 ft dry van moves up to 42,000 lbs on an exclusive-use run. A two-driver team keeps it moving on long trips. Dry vans suit full loads of high-value or time-sensitive freight. A dedicated van skips the terminal stops of shared freight.

Premium trucking What it means

What premium trucking really means

Many searches for the term look for companies with that name. As a service, it means a level of trucking above standard shared freight.

In practice, premium trucking puts one dedicated truck on your load. The truck carries nothing else and drives straight to the destination with no terminal stops. On long urgent runs, two drivers can keep it moving, and one contact watches the shipment the whole way.

The difference

Less handling, firmer timing

Dedicated service skips terminals, so freight is handled less and arrives on a predictable schedule.

Service levels Compared with standard

How premium service compares with standard

When you have freight that cannot wait for the next scheduled truck, dedicated service gives you a truck that leaves when your load is ready. Standard LTL shares a trailer with other shippers and moves through terminals, where freight is unloaded and sorted. Standard truckload fills a 53 ft trailer on the carrier's schedule.

Premium service sends the right-sized truck now, for one load. A few urgent pallets do not have to wait for a full trailer, and fragile freight is not handled at a terminal. It's also a good option for loads with a fixed delivery time, so the receiving dock or crew can plan around it.

We match the truck to your freight and deadline. Your shipment stays with one truck and one driver from pickup to delivery.

About sprinter vans

An enclosed van for parts, electronics and a few pallets, sent on demand. It is the quickest truck to dispatch. The freight rides locked inside, out of the weather.

Value or deadline is high

A dedicated truck pays off when late or damaged freight would cost more than the truck.

Freight types What qualifies

Freight that justifies premium service

A dedicated truck costs more than a shared one, larger than the cost of LTL but often less than the cost of a missed deadline. The freight that justifies it usually has a clock on it or a high value.

Premium service works well for production parts for a stopped line, such as pumps, motors and tooling. It suits high-value electronics, servers, medical equipment, finished goods and trade show materials. Fragile freight that should not be handled at a terminal also belongs on a dedicated truck.

When the freight is low value and the deadline is loose, standard LTL or truckload is usually enough. We match the service to your freight and timeline, so you pay for premium only when it makes sense.

Premium Trucking Questions Answered

What is premium trucking?

Premium trucking is a level of service above standard shared freight. It usually means a dedicated truck that carries only one shipper's load and drives straight to the destination, with no terminal stops. It often includes expedited timing, two drivers on long urgent runs and one contact who monitors the shipment. Many people searching the term are looking for companies named Premium or Premier Trucking. As a service, premium trucking suits freight that is valuable, fragile or due at a fixed time, where late or damaged freight would cost more than the truck.

What does exclusive use mean in trucking?

Exclusive use means the truck carries only one shipper's freight for the whole trip. No other loads are added along the way, and the truck does not stop at terminals to sort freight. That reduces handling, which lowers the risk of damage or loss, and it keeps timing predictable because the driver goes straight to the destination. Dedicated vans, hot shots and full truckloads all work this way. It differs from LTL and parcel service, where many shippers' items share the same vehicle and pass through sorting hubs.

What is dedicated trucking?

Dedicated trucking has two common meanings. In contract logistics, it means a carrier assigns specific trucks and drivers to one shipper on recurring routes, often under a long-term agreement. In expedited freight, it means a truck dedicated to a single shipment, carrying no other freight and driving direct. Both give the shipper a truck that works only for them. Contract dedicated fleets suit steady, predictable volume. Dedicated trucks booked per shipment suit urgent or one-off loads that cannot wait for a shared truck or a scheduled pickup.

What is a private fleet?

A private fleet is a group of trucks a company owns or leases and operates for its own freight, with its own drivers. Retailers, distributors and manufacturers often run private fleets to control delivery schedules and service. The company carries all the costs of trucks, drivers, insurance, maintenance and compliance. Many companies with private fleets still book outside carriers for overflow, one-way loads or urgent shipments their own trucks cannot cover. A private fleet differs from dedicated contract carriage, where a carrier supplies the trucks and drivers for the shipper.

How many vehicles make a fleet?

There is no single legal definition. In everyday business use, a fleet is any group of vehicles a company owns or operates for its work, and some insurers and vehicle programs treat as few as two to five vehicles as a fleet. In trucking, fleet size is often described by the number of power units, meaning the tractors or trucks a carrier operates. FMCSA records list a carrier's power units and drivers. For a shipper, fleet size matters less than whether the carrier is properly registered, insured and available for your load.

How is expedited freight different from LTL?

Expedited freight moves faster than standard service, usually on a dedicated vehicle that carries one shipment and drives straight to the destination. LTL, or less than truckload, combines freight from several shippers in one trailer and moves it through terminals, where it is sorted onto other trucks. LTL can cost less for small shipments with flexible timing. Expedited costs more because you pay for the whole vehicle, but it avoids terminal handling and keeps timing predictable. Shippers often use LTL for routine freight and expedited for urgent or sensitive loads.

What is hot shot trucking?

Hot shot trucking uses a heavy-duty pickup pulling a flatbed or gooseneck trailer to move smaller urgent loads. The truck is dispatched for one shipment and drives directly to the destination. A hot shot carries up to 16,000 lbs on a deck up to about 40 ft. It suits equipment, machinery, steel, pipe and building materials that load by forklift or crane. Hot shot sits between enclosed vans and box trucks on one side and full flatbed semis on the other. It is a common choice for construction, energy, agriculture and manufacturing freight.

What is white glove delivery?

White glove delivery is a higher level of handling, usually for fragile, high-value or bulky items. It can include inside delivery to a specific room, unpacking, placement, assembly and removal of packaging. It is common for medical equipment, electronics, furniture and displays. The exact services vary by provider, so shippers should spell out what is needed, such as liftgate use, inside delivery or an appointment. White glove service differs from dedicated trucking, which describes how the freight travels, though the two are often combined for sensitive freight.

What is chain of custody in shipping?

Chain of custody is the record of who had control of a shipment at each point from pickup to delivery. It shows when the freight was handed over, by whom and in what condition. Fewer handoffs make the chain simpler and reduce the chance of loss, damage or theft. A dedicated truck that carries one shipment directly keeps custody with one driver for the whole trip. Signed bills of lading at pickup and delivery, tracking updates and proof of delivery all form part of the record for sensitive or high-value freight.

What is a USDOT number?

A USDOT number is the identifier the U.S. Department of Transportation assigns to companies that operate commercial vehicles in interstate commerce. It links to the company's registration, inspections, crash history and safety data. Carriers that haul freight for hire across state lines also need operating authority, shown by an MC number, and brokers hold separate broker authority. Any shipper can look up a USDOT or MC number in FMCSA's public records. Checking it before booking shows whether a company is registered, what kind of authority it holds and whether that authority is active.
