RELIABLE TRUCKING

Trucking You Can Plan Around

When freight arrives late, the cost rarely stays with the shipper. A production line waits, a crew stands idle or a customer gets a missed promise.

HotShotTrucking.com books a dedicated truck sized to the load and keeps one dispatcher on it from quote to delivery. You get updates without chasing anyone, and early warning if anything changes.

Reliability is easiest to judge before you book. A good trucking company asks about the freight, confirms the equipment and gives you a clear pickup and delivery time. It also tells you who to call and what happens if a truck breaks down. We work that way on every load.

Reliability starts with the right truck. These three cover most loads, and the next section explains how to judge whether any trucking company is reliable.

SMALL URGENT LOADS sprinter-vans

Sprinter Vans

A cargo van carries up to 3,000 lbs of parts or a few pallets straight to the receiver. With no hubs on the way, there are fewer places for a delay. Vans are also easy to replace at short notice if one breaks down. That keeps a backup option open on urgent loads.

PALLETS AND DELIVERIES box-trucks

Box Trucks

A 12 to 16 ft box truck takes a handful of pallets, up to 5,000 lbs. Many have a liftgate for receivers without a dock. Box trucks fit most commercial docks and many curbside deliveries. They suit retail restocks and plant-to-plant transfers.

53' Dry Vans

A 53 ft dry van moves up to 42,000 lbs of enclosed freight on a dedicated run. It drives dock to dock, with no terminal transfers. Dry vans suit palletized freight that needs to stay out of the weather. On long runs, two drivers can keep the truck moving.

Reliable trucking What it means

What makes trucking reliable

Many searches for this term look for companies with 'Reliable' in their name. This page explains how to judge any trucking company instead.

Reliable trucking comes down to a few things you can check. The right truck arrives when it was promised. The freight arrives in the same condition it left. Updates reach you without chasing anyone. When something goes wrong, the company tells you early and fixes it fast.

Look up the USDOT number

FMCSA records show whether a company's authority is active and interstate.

Checklist Checking a company

How to check a trucking company

When a company's website isn't enough to judge it, its public records might be the answer. Start with the USDOT and MC numbers. Look them up in FMCSA records to confirm the authority is active and that the company can haul across state lines.

Ask for a certificate of insurance and check that cargo coverage fits the freight's value. Review the safety record and CSA data, and note how long the authority has been active. Read reviews for patterns, such as repeated late deliveries or poor communication, not single complaints. Then notice how quickly the company answers your quote request.

These checks take a few minutes and protect your freight from start to finish. Your shipment then stays with a company you have already checked.

Why it works

Fewer handoffs, fewer surprises

A truck that carries only your load avoids terminal delays and extra handling.

Dedicated trucks Dedicated vs terminals

Why dedicated trucks are more predictable

From production parts to fragile equipment to full trailer loads, we arrange dedicated trucks for freight that has to arrive as planned. A shared truck moving through terminals adds handoffs, sorting and waiting. Each one is a chance for delay or damage.

A dedicated truck carries only your load and drives straight to the destination. That makes timing easier to predict and freight easier to protect. The truck is sized to the load. That can be a Sprinter van carrying up to 3,000 lbs or a 53 ft dry van carrying up to 42,000 lbs. As with most expedited freight, distance, truck size and timing all affect the cost.

HotShotTrucking.com books dedicated trucks for these loads across the country. Every shipment is monitored from pickup to drop-off.

What it means for you

When a line stops because a truck is late, the cost of waiting dwarfs the cost of the trip. That is why reliable trucking is worth more than the cheapest quote. A truck that arrives when promised protects everything downstream.

Ask before booking

What happens if it's late?

A reliable company can explain its plan for delays before you book.

Delays Handling delays

How delays should be handled

Freight providers usually plan for problems before they happen, including weather, traffic, breakdowns and held docks. This means a delay does not have to become a missed delivery whenever something goes wrong.

Good handling starts with early warning. You should hear about a delay as soon as the company knows, with a clear new arrival time. If a truck breaks down, a backup truck should be lined up rather than left to chance. One person should own the problem until it is solved.

Before you book, ask how the company tracks loads and what it does when a truck runs late. HotShotTrucking.com keeps one dispatcher on every load to make sure you hear about changes first.

Why Cheap Freight Costs More: Mike Pettrey on Trust & Expedited Trucking

On this episode of On Air with AirFreight.com, host Kevin Carpenter sits down with Mike Pettrey, CEO of C&M Transport out of Painesville, Ohio — one of AirFreight.com's most trusted carrier partners and one of the oldest expedite companies in the country, now in its 35th year.

Mike shares how his father founded C&M around fair treatment of drivers and owner-operators, why straight trucks and sprinter vans became the backbone of the expedite industry, and how dedicated capacity mitigates cargo risk that traditional LTL can't. The conversation covers freight rate compression since 1991, the industry's price-driven race to the bottom, why regulatory crackdowns are (in their view) good for carriers who play it straight, and how technology — real-time tracking, proactive delay alerts — is raising the bar for customer transparency without replacing the human judgment calls that keep freight moving safely.

Reliable Trucking Questions Answered

What makes a trucking company reliable?

A reliable trucking company does what it promises, consistently. The right truck arrives when scheduled, the freight arrives in the same condition it left, and the shipper gets updates without having to chase anyone. When something goes wrong, such as weather or a breakdown, the company says so early, gives a new time and arranges a fix. Reliability also rests on basics: active operating authority, proper insurance, a sound safety record and clear paperwork. Patterns in reviews often show whether a company meets these standards over time.

What is a USDOT number?

A USDOT number is the identifier the U.S. Department of Transportation assigns to companies that operate commercial vehicles in interstate commerce. It links to the company's registration, inspections, crash history and safety data. Carriers that haul freight for hire across state lines also need operating authority, shown by an MC number, and brokers hold separate broker authority. Any shipper can look up a USDOT or MC number in FMCSA's public records. Checking it before booking shows whether a company is registered, what kind of authority it holds and whether that authority is active.

What is MC authority?

MC authority, or operating authority, is the permission FMCSA grants a company to transport regulated freight for hire, or to arrange it, across state lines. It is identified by an MC number alongside the company's USDOT number. Carriers hold motor carrier authority, and brokers hold broker authority, and some companies hold both. Authority can be active, pending, inactive or revoked, and its status is public. Checking it before booking confirms the company is allowed to do the work it is offering.

What is a dispatch service in trucking?

A dispatch service works for carriers, usually small fleets and owner-operators. It finds loads for their trucks, negotiates rates and handles paperwork in exchange for a fee. A dispatch service does not represent shippers, does not own trucks and is not a freight broker. Shippers sometimes deal with dispatchers when they book directly with a small carrier. For a shipper, the key question is who is legally responsible for the shipment, which will be either the carrier hauling it or the broker that arranged it.

What is the difference between a freight broker and a carrier?

A carrier owns or leases trucks and employs or contracts the drivers who haul freight, under motor carrier operating authority. A freight broker arranges transportation for others by booking a licensed carrier for the load and managing the shipment through delivery, under separate broker authority. The broker is the shipper's contact for the move, while the carrier supplies the truck and driver. Shippers use carriers directly when they know a truck nearby, and use brokers when they need a truck found quickly, a different truck size, or a backup when a truck falls through.

What should a certificate of insurance show?

A certificate of insurance summarizes a trucking company's coverage. It should show the insured company's name matching its authority records, the insurance companies, the policy numbers, the coverage dates and the limits for auto liability and cargo coverage. Check that the policies are current for your shipment dates and that cargo coverage fits the value of your freight. If the freight is worth more than the cargo limit, ask about extra coverage. Many shippers ask to be listed as certificate holders so they receive notice of changes.

What are CSA scores?

CSA stands for Compliance, Safety, Accountability, the FMCSA program that measures motor carriers' safety performance. It groups inspection and crash data into categories such as unsafe driving, hours-of-service compliance, vehicle maintenance, driver fitness and controlled substances. Each carrier's results are compared with similar carriers, and high results can flag problems. Small carriers may have little data because they have fewer inspections. Shippers can review CSA information in FMCSA records alongside authority and insurance when judging a carrier. Some carriers also publish their safety ratings.

What is an interstate carrier?

An interstate carrier is a trucking company allowed to haul freight across state lines. It needs a USDOT number and, when hauling regulated freight for hire, active operating authority from FMCSA. An intrastate carrier operates only within one state and follows that state's rules, which may not require federal authority. For freight moving between states, booking an interstate carrier is essential. FMCSA records show whether a company is authorized for interstate operation and what type of authority it holds. Check this before booking any cross-state load.

What is proof of delivery?

Proof of delivery, or POD, is the record that a shipment reached its destination and who received it. It is usually the bill of lading signed by the receiver, often with a printed name, date, time and notes on the freight's condition. Electronic signatures and photos are also common. Proof of delivery closes out the shipment and supports invoicing. If freight arrives damaged or short, the receiver should note it on the proof of delivery before signing, which is the first step in any claim.

What is a dedicated truck?

A dedicated truck is a vehicle reserved for one shipment or one shipper. In expedited freight, it means a truck that carries only your load and drives straight to the destination, with no other freight and no terminal stops. That reduces handling and makes timing easier to predict. Dedicated trucks range from cargo vans and box trucks to hot shots and full 53 ft trailers. In contract logistics, the term can also mean trucks assigned to one shipper's regular routes over a longer period.
