TRUCK TRANSPORTATION

Commercial Freight, Matched to the Right Truck

Choosing a truck transportation company is easier when you start with the freight. Pallets, parts and equipment each need a different truck, and the wrong one costs time or money.

HotShotTrucking.com arranges truck transportation for commercial freight of every size, nationwide. One dispatcher stays with your load from quote to delivery.

Before booking, we confirm the freight’s size, weight, loading method and deadline. That decides the right truck and whether it needs a liftgate, ramps or tarps. Once it is moving, one dispatcher keeps you updated until the delivery is signed for.

These three trucks handle most business freight. The next section explains what a truck transportation company does for shippers.

PARTS AND CARTONS sprinter-vans

Sprinter Vans

A cargo van carries up to 3,000 lbs of urgent parts or cartons straight to the receiver. Vans can often pick up within hours of your call. They keep freight locked and dry the whole way.

Sprinter Van Services about Parts and cartons
EQUIPMENT AND MATERIALS flatbed-trucks

Flatbed Trucks

A 48 to 53 ft flatbed takes up to 48,000 lbs of machinery, steel and building materials that load by forklift or crane. Step decks are available for taller loads. Loads can be tarped for weather.

PALLETIZED LOADS 53-ft-dry-vans-1

53' Dry Vans

A 53 ft dry van moves up to 42,000 lbs of palletized goods between plants, warehouses and customers. Dry vans suit retail, consumer and manufactured goods. On long runs, two drivers can keep the truck moving.

Load and deadline first

The size of the load and the delivery date decide the mode, then the company.

Modes Choosing a mode

Choosing the right mode for your freight

Pick the mode before you pick the company. We help you match the load and the deadline to the right kind of service. LTL combines small shipments from many shippers in one trailer and moves them through terminals. Full truckload reserves a whole trailer for one shipper.

Expedited vans and box trucks carry smaller urgent loads direct. A hot shot carries open-deck partial loads that load by forklift or crane. Flatbeds and heavy haul trailers, such as step decks and RGNs, move big or heavy freight, sometimes with permits. When no truck can make the deadline, air freight can.

This approach removes guesswork, which cuts the risk of booking the wrong truck. Your shipment stays with one truck and one driver from pickup to delivery.

Matching the truck to the load

Whether your priority is speed, payload or reaching a tight site, the truck you book sets what is possible. A Sprinter van carries up to 3,000 lbs, a box truck up to 5,000 lbs and a straight truck up to 9,000 lbs. These small trucks suit loads too small for a 53 ft trailer.

A hot shot carries up to 16,000 lbs on an open deck up to about 40 ft. A 53 ft dry van carries up to 42,000 lbs, and a full flatbed up to 48,000 lbs. Freight that is taller or heavier than that moves on a step deck or RGN with permits.

Measure and weigh your freight before you call. We match the right truck to those numbers, so the one that arrives can carry your load.

Truck Transportation Questions Answered

What is heavy haul transportation?

Heavy haul transportation moves freight that is too heavy, tall, wide or long for a standard trailer, such as construction equipment, transformers, industrial machinery and large structural parts. It uses specialized trailers like step decks, double drops, removable gooseneck trailers and multi-axle lowboys. Many heavy haul loads go past legal limits and need oversize or overweight permits from each state on the route, set travel times and sometimes escort vehicles. Planning starts with exact dimensions and weight, so the trailer, route and permits can be arranged before the pickup date.

What is the difference between trucking and logistics?

Trucking is the physical movement of freight by truck, done by carriers with trucks and drivers. Logistics is broader: it covers planning and managing how goods move and are stored, including choosing modes, booking carriers, warehousing, inventory and tracking. A trucking company hauls the load. A logistics company, broker or 3PL may arrange the trucking without owning trucks, and may also manage storage and distribution. Many shippers work with both, using logistics providers to plan and book, and carriers to do the hauling.

What is a logistic truck?

A logistic truck is not a specific vehicle type. People use the phrase for trucks that move freight as part of a supply chain, such as box trucks, straight trucks and tractor-trailers used for distribution and deliveries. Some also use it for trucks fitted with logistic tracks or rails inside the cargo area, which hold straps and load bars to keep freight from shifting. For shippers, the useful question is which size and type of truck suits the load, from a cargo van to a 53 ft trailer or a flatbed.

What are the four types of logistics?

Logistics is often grouped into four main types. Inbound logistics covers bringing materials and supplies into a business. Outbound logistics covers moving finished goods out to customers. Reverse logistics handles returns, repairs and recycling coming back. Third-party logistics means outsourcing some or all of these tasks to an outside provider. Trucking plays a part in all four, because most freight in the United States moves by truck for at least part of its journey, from the supplier's dock to the customer's door.

Should I ship LTL, full truckload or expedited?

It depends on the size of the load and how soon it must arrive. LTL suits small shipments with flexible timing, because your freight shares a trailer and moves through terminals. Full truckload suits large loads that fill most of a trailer and need direct, predictable transit. Expedited service suits urgent loads of any size, using a dedicated van, box truck, hot shot or trailer that drives straight to the destination. When a deadline is too tight even for expedited trucking, air freight is the next step.

Is there a small truck option for loads too small for a 53 ft trailer?

Yes. Smaller trucks move loads that would leave a 53 ft trailer mostly empty. A Sprinter van carries up to 3,000 lbs, a box truck up to 5,000 lbs and a straight truck up to 9,000 lbs. For open-deck freight, a hot shot carries up to 16,000 lbs. These trucks are often quicker to dispatch, reach tight city sites more easily and cost less than a full trailer for a small load. Booked as dedicated trucks, they still carry only your freight and drive direct.

What is a USDOT number?

A USDOT number is the identifier the U.S. Department of Transportation assigns to companies that operate commercial vehicles in interstate commerce. It links to the company's registration, inspections, crash history and safety data. Carriers that haul freight for hire across state lines also need operating authority, shown by an MC number, and brokers hold separate broker authority. Any shipper can look up a USDOT or MC number in FMCSA's public records. Checking it before booking shows whether a company is registered, what kind of authority it holds and whether that authority is active.

What documents do I need to ship freight?

For domestic truck freight, the main document is the bill of lading, which lists the shipper, receiver, pieces, weight and a description of the goods. The driver signs it at pickup and the receiver signs it at delivery. Hazardous materials need proper shipping papers and labels. Some shippers also include a packing list, and international shipments need customs paperwork such as a commercial invoice. Accurate details on the bill of lading matter most, because it becomes the proof of delivery and the starting point for any claim.

How do I track a shipment and get proof of delivery?

Most trucking companies and brokers share tracking updates by phone, email or an online link, often from GPS or driver check-ins. A dedicated truck that drives direct makes updates simpler because the freight stays with one driver. When the freight arrives, the receiver signs the bill of lading, noting any damage or shortage. That signed copy, or a photo or electronic version of it, is the proof of delivery. Ask before booking how updates will reach you and how quickly you will receive proof of delivery.

How do I file a freight damage claim?

Start at delivery. If freight is damaged or short, note it clearly on the bill of lading before signing, and take photos. Keep the damaged goods and packaging until the claim is settled. Then file a written claim with the carrier or broker, including the bill of lading, proof of delivery, photos, the invoice showing the freight's value and repair or replacement costs. Federal rules give time limits for filing claims, so act quickly. Carriers' cargo insurance usually covers claims up to set limits.
