Instead of consolidating freight through terminals like LTL, a dispatcher assigns a specific vehicle to your load and builds a direct plan around your timing and access requirements. Equipment can range from sprinter vans and straight trucks to pickup-and-trailer setups.

Pricing is influenced by more than mileage, even when a quote is expressed as a per-mile number. Key factors include equipment type, miles plus deadhead to pickup, urgency, pickup and delivery constraints, and accessorials such as liftgate service or scheduled appointments. Dimensions and weight matter because they determine what vehicle can haul the load legally and safely. Routing limitations and any permit needs can also affect cost and transit planning.

Hot shot is usually the better fit when you need a specific pickup or delivery time because the truck is dedicated and runs direct. LTL can be cost-effective, but it relies on terminals, scheduled linehaul, and rehandling, which adds variability. If the shipment can tolerate a delivery range and cost is the main driver, LTL may work. If the shipment is tied to downtime or a fixed receiving window, dedicated service is typically the safer operational choice.

Transit time depends on distance, driver hours-of-service limits, road conditions, and how quickly the freight can be loaded. A dedicated truck can depart as soon as it is loaded, which removes most network delays, but legal driving limits still apply. Delivery-side variables also matter, including appointments, gate procedures, and job-site access. The most accurate plan starts with your ready time and the consignee’s receiving rules.

Equipment is selected based on shipment size, weight, loading method, and unloading requirements. Smaller freight often moves in a sprinter van; larger palletized shipments may need a straight truck or tractor-trailer. Long or irregular cargo may require a pickup with a flatbed or gooseneck trailer. If you need side loading, forklift-only loading, or specific securement, share those details early so the truck arrives properly equipped.

Some hot shot moves can accommodate oversized freight, but it depends on dimensions, weight, route constraints, and the equipment required. Loads that exceed legal limits may require permits, which can affect routing and timing. Flatbed moves may also need additional securement considerations. Provide exact measurements, weight, and photos when possible so dispatch can confirm whether permits are required and what the realistic plan looks like.

Some configurations can operate without a CDL if the combined ratings and actual weights stay under applicable thresholds, but many commercial hot shot moves do require CDL-qualified drivers. For shippers, the main concern is that the hauling party is properly licensed and insured for the equipment and commodity. If the freight is heavy, involves a trailer, or needs flatbed securement, assume CDL capability may be part of the solution.
