NATIONWIDE TRUCKING

One Point of Contact for Freight Anywhere in the Lower 48

Freight that crosses the country often passes through a patchwork of carriers, each with its own schedule and contact. Every handoff is a chance for a delay.

HotShotTrucking.com books dedicated trucks to and from every lower 48 state, from Sprinter vans to 53 ft trailers. One dispatcher stays with your load from quote to delivery.

Long runs need more planning. We check the route, the drive time and the hours a driver can legally work, then book a team of two drivers if the deadline needs one. You get updates along the way from the same dispatcher until the freight is delivered.

These three trucks carry most of our cross-country freight. The next section explains what a nationwide trucking company does.

CROSS-COUNTRY VANS sprinter-vans

Sprinter Vans

A cargo van carries up to 3,000 lbs of urgent freight coast to coast. Two drivers can keep it moving on long runs. Vans are often the quickest truck to book for a small urgent load. They keep freight locked and dry the whole way.

Sprinter Van Services about Cross-country vans
OPEN-DECK FREIGHT hot-shot-truck

Hot Shot Trucking

A pickup with a gooseneck flatbed takes up to 16,000 lbs of equipment and materials across state lines. Hot shots can reach rural job sites that a tractor-trailer cannot. If the load is too big, we book a full flatbed.

FULL TRUCKLOADS 53-ft-dry-vans-1

53' Dry Vans

A 53 ft dry van moves up to 42,000 lbs of enclosed freight on a dedicated run, without terminal transfers. Dry vans suit full loads of palletized freight. Two drivers can keep the truck moving through the night.

Nationwide trucking What it means

What a nationwide trucking company does

Many searches for this term look for companies with 'Nationwide' in their name. This page explains the service instead.

A nationwide trucking company picks up and delivers across state lines, coast to coast. It holds the federal authority and insurance to do that, and it can put the right truck on a load in any region. Freight carriers are the companies that own trucks and haul the freight. Brokers arrange that haul for shippers.

Rule of thumb

Size, distance, deadline

Those three facts pick the right mode for a cross-country load.

Modes Long-distance modes

Choosing a mode for long-distance freight

Expedite providers usually match long-distance freight to a mode first, including vans, hot shots, full truckloads and flatbeds. This means the truck suits both the load and the distance whenever freight crosses the country.

A Sprinter van carries up to 3,000 lbs and a box truck up to 5,000 lbs for smaller urgent loads. A hot shot carries up to 16,000 lbs of open-deck freight. A 53 ft dry van carries up to 42,000 lbs, and a full flatbed up to 48,000 lbs. Oversize freight moves on step decks or RGNs with permits from each state on the route.

When no truck can make the deadline, air freight can. We match the mode to your load and deadline to make sure your freight arrives on time.

Long-distance options

Long-distance freight options compared

Each option moves freight across the country differently. Read across a row to see which fits your load, and HotShotTrucking.com can arrange all four.

Coverage Coverage and transit

Coverage and transit across the country

When a cross-country run has to arrive by a set date, distance and driver hours decide the timing. Pickups and deliveries can happen in any of the lower 48 states, from rural job sites to city docks.

Federal hours-of-service rules limit how long one driver can drive each day. On long, urgent runs, two drivers can take turns so the truck keeps moving. A dedicated truck drives direct, so it avoids the terminal stops that slow shared freight. Oversize loads crossing several states need a permit from each one, which adds planning time.

We plan the truck and the timing around your deadline. Your shipment stays with one truck and one driver team from pickup to delivery.

Nationwide Trucking Questions Answered

What are freight carriers?

Freight carriers are companies that transport goods for others. In trucking, a carrier owns or leases trucks and employs or contracts the drivers who haul the freight, under operating authority from FMCSA. Carriers range from owner-operators with one truck to fleets with thousands. Some run regional routes and others cross the country. Freight carriers differ from freight brokers, which arrange transportation by booking carriers but do not haul freight themselves. Rail, air and ocean companies are also freight carriers in their own modes.

What does a nationwide trucking company do?

A nationwide trucking company moves freight between any two points in the country, usually across state lines. It may run its own trucks, book licensed carriers as a broker, or both. Nationwide service covers a range of equipment, from vans and box trucks to full trailers and flatbeds, so the right truck can be sent wherever the freight is. For shippers, the value is one company and one contact for loads in any region, instead of separate local carriers for each area.

Is a nationwide trucking company a carrier or a broker?

It can be either, or both. A carrier hauls freight with its own trucks and drivers, which gives control on the lanes it runs. A broker books licensed carriers and manages the move, which gives reach across regions and equipment types. Many shippers find brokers useful for nationwide freight because one company can find trucks anywhere. FMCSA records show what type of authority a company holds, so shippers can check whether they are dealing with a carrier, a broker or a company with both.

How long does cross-country freight take by truck?

Transit depends on distance, the route and how many drivers are on the truck. Federal hours-of-service rules limit how long one driver can drive in a day and require rest breaks, so a solo driver covers a set distance daily. Two drivers can take turns and keep the truck moving much longer. Direct trucks also avoid terminal stops, which slow shared freight. Weather, traffic and delivery appointments matter too. For the tightest deadlines over very long distances, air freight is usually faster.

What is a USDOT number?

A USDOT number is the identifier the U.S. Department of Transportation assigns to companies that operate commercial vehicles in interstate commerce. It links to the company's registration, inspections, crash history and safety data. Carriers that haul freight for hire across state lines also need operating authority, shown by an MC number, and brokers hold separate broker authority. Any shipper can look up a USDOT or MC number in FMCSA's public records. Checking it before booking shows whether a company is registered, what kind of authority it holds and whether that authority is active.

What cargo insurance is typical and how are claims filed?

Trucking carriers carry cargo insurance that covers loss or damage to freight in transit, up to the policy's limit. Limits vary, so shippers should ask for a certificate of insurance and compare the cargo limit with the freight's value, buying extra coverage if needed. To file a claim, note any damage or shortage on the bill of lading at delivery, take photos, keep the damaged goods and packaging, and submit a written claim with the invoice and supporting documents. Federal rules set time limits for filing.

Can oversize loads move across several states?

Yes, with planning. Loads that exceed legal width, height, length or weight limits need an oversize or overweight permit from each state on the route. Each permit can set the route, the hours the truck may travel and whether escort vehicles are required, and rules differ by state. Lower trailers such as step decks and removable gooseneck trailers sometimes keep a load within limits and reduce the permits needed. Exact dimensions and weight, shared early, give time to plan the route and permits.

What is a bill of lading?

A bill of lading, often called a BOL, is the shipping document that travels with the freight. It lists the shipper, the consignee, the pickup and delivery addresses, the number of pieces, the weight and a description of the goods. The driver signs it at pickup to confirm the freight was received in the stated condition, and the consignee signs it at delivery. The signed copy becomes the proof of delivery. If freight arrives damaged or short, the bill of lading is the starting point for any claim, so its details should always be accurate.

How far ahead should I schedule a pickup?

For a dedicated van, box truck or hot shot, many loads can be picked up the same day or the next day, depending on where trucks are. Full truckloads usually go more smoothly with a few days' notice, especially on busy lanes or when capacity is tight. Oversize loads need extra lead time for permits. The more detail you give at booking, including dimensions, weight, dock hours and appointments, the easier it is to line up the right truck at the right time.

How do fuel prices and capacity affect a quote?

Fuel is one of the largest costs of running a truck, so higher diesel prices raise the cost of every trip, especially long hauls. Capacity matters too. When trucks are scarce, carriers can turn down loads, and short-notice freight costs more. When capacity is loose, trucks are easier to find and prices ease. Distance, weight, truck type and timing still drive the basic cost. Booking early and choosing the right-sized truck are the simplest ways to manage these swings. Flexible pickup dates also help.

John Mark was a pleasure to work with and kept me updated on the driver's progress as it was an urgent and timely delivery we needed 11 hours away.
